What are micro(trace) minerals and macrominerals (electrolytes)?
Micro (trace) minerals (the average person needs less than 100mg/ day):
Iron
Zinc
Manganese
Selenium
Molybdenum
Chromium
Copper
Iodine
Fluoride
Macrominerals (electrolytes)(the average person needs more than > 100mg/ day)
Magnesium
Sodium
Chloride
Potassium
Phosphorous
Sulfur
Calcium
So as you can see we need macrominerals (electrolytes) in larger quantities than we need micro (trace) minerals
So why are trace minerals important?
They regulate our hormone health
Play a role in immune system regulation
They are important for skin health (as they help with collagen synthesis)
Prevent oxidative damage
Are needed for liver detoxification
Play a role in blood sugar regulation
Where can we get trace minerals from?
Natural water sources like springs, ocean water, and rivers in certain parts of the world (think – the least polluted parts) contain abundant minerals. Hundreds of years ago we would be able to get these trace minerals through our water and soil but our tap water is stripped of these minerals (and unfortunately contains toxic contaminants). This is why we as a whole are so depleted in minerals.
My thoughts and how do trace/ macro minerals make me feel?
I have been using trace mineral drops in my water for about 6 months now. Boy was I missing out prior to using them. I can without a doubt notice a difference when I don’t use them.
They are a huge game changer when it comes to my energy levels. On the days that I forget to use them I get towards dinner time and I’m exhausted and question why I feel so tired. Then I realize I forgot to take them and it all makes sense.
Another huge change for me has been my immune system. Usually in the winter I generally feel pretty run down and get sick a few times. This year I got sick once but it was definitely not as bad as in the past.
Another huge thing for me is my general mental well-being. I have a clearer mental state and it makes me feel more upbeat and positive.
As a nutritionist another huge thing for me is doing as many things as possible as close to as nature intended. In terms of minerals (and many other things nutritionally) in order to be absorbed it needs to work synergistically with other minerals. Ocean water is known to be one of the best sources of trace minerals and in the proper ratio that is needed to help each mineral be absorbed.
You want to be careful where you get your trace minerals. I, personally, use Aussie Trace minerals because they are third party tested and source their water from southern Australia close to Antarctica.
